How to Handle a Medical Emergency
How to Handle a Medical Emergency
Medical emergencies can happen unexpectedly, often leaving us in a state of panic and uncertainty. Knowing how to respond quickly and calmly is essential to ensuring the best possible outcome for the person in need. Whether you're at home, at work, or on the go, it's important to stay composed and follow a few critical steps to handle a medical emergency efficiently. In this blog, we will walk you through the process of managing an emergency and explain how seeking professional medical help, like the one available at Continental Hospitals, can make a significant difference. Stay Calm and Assess the Situation The first thing you need to do in any medical emergency is to stay calm. Panic can cloud your judgment and make it harder to assess the situation properly. Take a deep breath, and focus on the person in need. Look around and gather as much information as possible: What exactly happened? Is the person breathing? Are there any visible injuries? Are there other people around who can assist? These initial observations can help you make quick decisions and determine whether it's necessary to call for professional medical help or if immediate first aid is required. Call for Help Once you’ve assessed the situation, if the person is experiencing a serious health problem, the next step is to call for professional help immediately. This can include dialing emergency services or calling a local hospital for guidance. For Continental Hospitals, you can contact them directly at 040-6700-0111. When calling, provide essential information, including: The location of the emergency A brief description of what happened The condition of the person (conscious, breathing, etc.) Any other relevant information (e.g., allergies, existing conditions) If you’re unsure whether it’s a life-threatening situation, it’s always best to err on the side of caution and seek help. Time is often crucial in medical emergencies, so quick intervention can save lives. Perform Basic First Aid While waiting for medical help to arrive, there are several basic first aid techniques you can perform. These actions will not only stabilize the person but also give them the best chance of a positive outcome until professional care is available. Here are some common first aid tips for various types of medical emergencies: Cardiac Arrest: If the person collapses and is unresponsive, check if they are breathing. If they aren’t, start CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) right away. Push down hard and fast on the chest at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute. If you are trained in CPR, use the appropriate mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Otherwise, continuous chest compressions are vital. Severe Bleeding: Apply pressure to the wound using a clean cloth or bandage. If the bleeding doesn't stop, apply more pressure or use a tourniquet above the wound if trained to do so. Choking: If a person is choking and unable to cough, try giving them abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver). For infants, use gentle back slaps and chest thrusts. Broken Bones: If someone has a suspected broken bone, keep them still and immobilize the area with a splint or by using nearby materials to prevent further injury. Burns: For a minor burn, rinse the area with cool water for at least 10 minutes. Avoid ice or very cold water, as it can make the burn worse. For severe burns, cover the area with a clean cloth or bandage and wait for medical help. Stroke: If you suspect someone is having a stroke (symptoms may include sudden weakness, numbness, or slurred speech), act quickly. Call emergency services, note the time the symptoms began, and try to keep the person calm. Monitor the Person’s Condition While waiting for help to arrive, it’s crucial to monitor the person’s condition. Keep an eye on their breathing, pulse, and responsiveness. If they lose consciousness, keep their head elevated and check their airway for any obstruction. In cases of severe pain, reassure them and prevent them from moving too much to avoid causing further injury. Transporting the Person If you are in a position where you need to transport the person to the hospital, it is important to move them carefully and slowly. Only attempt to do this if the person is in immediate danger in their current location (e.g., a car accident or fire). Avoid moving someone who may have a neck, back, or head injury unless absolutely necessary, as this could cause further harm. Follow Up with Professional Care Once the person is in the hands of trained medical professionals, they will take over the care and assessment of the situation. It's important to follow their instructions and provide any information that may help in diagnosing or treating the person. Hospitals like Continental Hospitals offer expert care and have the right facilities to handle various medical emergencies with precision and efficiency. When to Seek Immediate Help While some minor injuries or illnesses can be managed at home, there are specific situations where immediate medical attention is crucial. These include: Chest pain or symptoms of a heart attack Difficulty breathing or severe shortness of breath Sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body Severe burns or deep wounds Uncontrollable bleeding Seizures or loss of consciousness In all of these situations, professional medical care is necessary to address the issue properly and prevent further complications. Conclusion Handling a medical emergency effectively requires quick thinking, calmness, and the right knowledge. Knowing what to do, whether it’s performing first aid or contacting professional medical help, can be the difference between life and death. If you or someone you know faces a medical emergency, don’t hesitate to reach out to the experts at Continental Hospitals. Their dedicated team of professionals will ensure the best possible care in your time of need. <iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/31X0MCADf8g" width="560" height="314" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe> Remember, in case of any emergency, call 040-6700-0111 for immediate assistance. It’s always better to be prepared, stay calm, and know who to call for help when every second counts. Read More
How to Boost Your Child’s Immunity
How to Boost Your Child’s Immunity
As a parent, one of your primary concerns is ensuring that your child stays healthy and protected from illnesses. A strong immune system plays a crucial role in defending against infections, allergies, and other health issues. Fortunately, there are simple and effective steps you can take to boost your child’s immunity, helping them lead a healthier, happier life. In this blog, we’ll explore some of the best ways to strengthen your child’s immune system through diet, lifestyle, and routine practices. 1. Balanced and Nutrient-Rich Diet A healthy, balanced diet is one of the most important factors in supporting your child’s immune health. Eating a variety of nutrient-rich foods helps provide the vitamins and minerals needed for optimal immune function. Here are some key nutrients to include: Vitamin C: This vitamin is essential for immune health, helping the body fight infections. Foods rich in vitamin C include citrus fruits (oranges, lemons), strawberries, bell peppers, and broccoli. Vitamin D: Vitamin D plays a critical role in activating the immune system. Ensure your child gets enough sunlight, and include foods like fortified milk, eggs, and fatty fish such as salmon. Zinc: Zinc supports immune cell development and function. Include zinc-rich foods like beans, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Probiotics: A healthy gut is essential for a strong immune system. Foods like yogurt, kefir, and other fermented foods can help promote gut health by boosting good bacteria. Encourage your child to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains to help their immune system function at its best. 2. Adequate Sleep Sleep is vital for your child’s growth, development, and overall health. During sleep, the body repairs itself and strengthens the immune system. Lack of sleep can lead to weakened immunity, making your child more susceptible to illnesses. The amount of sleep your child needs varies by age: Toddlers (1-3 years): 12-14 hours Preschoolers (3-5 years): 10-13 hours School-age children (6-12 years): 9-12 hours Teenagers (13-18 years): 8-10 hours Establish a consistent bedtime routine, avoid caffeine and screen time before bed, and create a calm, quiet sleep environment to ensure your child gets the rest they need. 3. Physical Activity Regular physical activity is not only good for your child’s body but also strengthens their immune system. Exercise helps increase the circulation of immune cells, which in turn supports the body’s defense mechanisms. It also reduces stress and inflammation, which can negatively impact the immune system. Encourage your child to engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week. Activities like running, swimming, biking, or playing sports are great ways to keep your child active and healthy. 4. Stay Hydrated Water is essential for overall health, including immune function. Dehydration can impair the body’s ability to fight infections, so it’s important to encourage your child to drink enough fluids throughout the day. Water, herbal teas, and milk are great options. As a rule of thumb, children should drink the following amount of water: Toddlers (1-3 years): 4 cups (32 ounces) Preschoolers (4-5 years): 5 cups (40 ounces) School-age children (6-8 years): 7 cups (56 ounces) Older children and teens (9-18 years): 8-11 cups (64-88 ounces) Make sure to provide water during meals and snacks, and encourage your child to drink before, during, and after physical activity. 5. Good Hygiene Habits Teaching your child proper hygiene is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce the spread of germs and infections. Encourage these hygiene practices: Hand washing: Teach your child to wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the restroom, before eating, and after playing outside. Covering coughs and sneezes: Teach your child to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or their elbow to prevent germs from spreading. Cleaning toys and surfaces: Regularly clean toys, doorknobs, and other frequently touched surfaces in your home to reduce the risk of infections. By instilling these habits early on, you help your child build lifelong practices that support their health and immunity. 6. Reduce Stress Chronic stress can weaken the immune system, making it more difficult for the body to fight infections. While stress is a part of life, it’s essential to help your child manage stress in healthy ways. Consider the following strategies: Encourage relaxation: Teach your child to take deep breaths, meditate, or do gentle stretches to help calm their mind and body. Create a predictable routine: Having a consistent daily schedule can reduce stress and help your child feel more secure. Encourage hobbies: Help your child engage in activities they enjoy, whether it’s reading, drawing, or playing with friends, to relax and unwind. 7. Limit Sugar and Processed Foods Excessive sugar and processed foods can negatively impact your child’s immune system by promoting inflammation and reducing the body’s ability to fight off infections. Instead of sugary snacks, offer healthier alternatives like fruits, nuts, or yogurt. By limiting processed foods and focusing on whole, nutrient-dense foods, you can help your child build a stronger immune system that is better equipped to handle illnesses. Conclusion A strong immune system is vital for your child’s health and well-being. By following these simple tips—providing a balanced diet, ensuring adequate sleep, encouraging physical activity, teaching good hygiene habits, managing stress, and limiting sugar—you can help boost your child’s immunity and protect them from illness. <iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/z6ZuP_Xtc2g" width="560" height="314" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe> If you have concerns about your child’s health or immunity, Consult our best pediatrician at Continental Hospitals. Fertility is a key part of overall health and well-being, but when it comes to male fertility, many often overlook its importance. A significant number of men face fertility challenges, which can stem from a range of factors. Whether you are looking to start a family or just want to enhance your reproductive health, there are several steps you can take to boost male fertility. Understanding Male Fertility Male fertility refers to a man's ability to produce healthy sperm capable of fertilizing an egg. However, a variety of issues—ranging from lifestyle choices to medical conditions—can impact sperm production and quality. Problems like low sperm count, poor sperm motility (movement), or abnormal sperm shape can make conception more difficult. The good news is that many of these issues can be improved with simple changes. 1. Maintain a Healthy Diet What you eat plays a crucial role in your reproductive health. A well-balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants can support sperm production and improve sperm quality. Key nutrients to focus on include: Zinc: Found in foods like nuts, seeds, and legumes, zinc is essential for healthy sperm production. Vitamin C: This antioxidant, found in citrus fruits, strawberries, and bell peppers, helps protect sperm from oxidative stress and enhances motility. Folic Acid: Present in leafy greens, lentils, and fortified grains, folic acid helps with sperm production and DNA integrity. Vitamin E: Commonly found in nuts, seeds, and leafy greens, vitamin E acts as an antioxidant, helping to protect sperm from free radical damage. Incorporating a variety of these nutrients into your diet will not only improve fertility but also support your overall health. 2. Exercise Regularly Exercise can be beneficial for boosting male fertility, but moderation is key. Regular physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight, reduces stress, and improves hormone levels. However, excessive or intense exercise can have the opposite effect, potentially lowering sperm count and testosterone levels. Aim for moderate-intensity exercises such as walking, jogging, swimming, or cycling. Focus on strength training as it helps maintain muscle mass and improves metabolism. Avoid excessive intense cardio or workouts that could strain the body and lead to a decrease in sperm quality. Balanced exercise, combined with a healthy diet, can lead to better fertility outcomes. 3. Manage Stress Chronic stress is not just an emotional concern; it can also affect your fertility. High levels of stress can lead to hormonal imbalances, reduced testosterone production, and impaired sperm quality. In some cases, stress can even contribute to erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation, further complicating fertility issues. To manage stress, try techniques such as: Mindfulness Meditation: Regular meditation can help reduce stress levels and increase mental clarity. Yoga or Stretching: These practices help release physical tension and improve circulation. Deep Breathing Exercises: Focused breathing can help calm the nervous system and reduce anxiety. Time Management: Proper planning and setting aside time for relaxation can help reduce the pressure that leads to stress. Managing stress effectively not only boosts your fertility but also contributes to overall well-being. 4. Avoid Environmental Toxins Exposure to environmental toxins can negatively affect sperm quality. Chemicals found in plastics, pesticides, and other pollutants can disrupt hormone production, leading to decreased sperm count and motility. Some common toxins to be mindful of include: Pesticides and Herbicides: These chemicals can affect sperm count and motility. Endocrine Disruptors: Found in plastics (like BPA), these chemicals interfere with hormonal balance. Heavy Metals: Lead, mercury, and other heavy metals can damage sperm DNA and reduce fertility. To minimize exposure, reduce the use of plastic containers, avoid chemicals in the home and workplace, and ensure your living environment is free from harmful pollutants. 5. Maintain a Healthy Weight Being overweight or obese can have a significant impact on male fertility. Excess fat, especially around the abdomen, can cause hormonal imbalances that affect sperm production and quality. Maintaining a healthy weight by following a balanced diet and regular exercise routine is essential for improving fertility. Men with a body mass index (BMI) above the healthy range often have lower testosterone levels and higher levels of estrogen, which can impair sperm production. By losing excess weight and maintaining a healthy BMI, you can improve your fertility prospects. 6. Limit Alcohol and Quit Smoking Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can both significantly reduce sperm quality. Smoking reduces sperm count, motility, and overall sperm health, while alcohol can lower testosterone levels and damage sperm DNA. To boost fertility: Quit smoking: If you smoke, quitting can have a positive impact on your sperm health within a few months. Limit alcohol consumption: Stick to moderate drinking, as heavy drinking can affect sperm count and quality. Avoid recreational drugs: Certain drugs, including marijuana, can lower sperm production and affect sperm function. 7. Get Enough Sleep Sleep is vital for overall health, and it plays an essential role in reproductive health. Poor sleep patterns or insufficient sleep can lead to hormonal imbalances, decreased sperm count, and lower testosterone levels. Aim for 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night to allow your body to repair and regenerate. 8. Seek Medical Advice Sometimes, lifestyle changes alone may not be enough to improve male fertility. If you have been trying to conceive for over a year without success or suspect underlying medical conditions, it is essential to seek advice from a specialist. At Continental Hospitals, we offer expert consultations and comprehensive fertility testing to identify potential issues affecting male fertility. Whether it's hormonal imbalances, varicocele, or other underlying conditions, our team can help guide you through the necessary treatments to improve your fertility and overall health. How Stress Affects Your Libido
How Stress Affects Your Libido
Stress is a common part of daily life, but it can take a significant toll on your body and mind. Among the many physical and emotional effects of stress, one that is often overlooked is its impact on libido or sexual desire. In this blog, we will explore how stress can affect your libido, the underlying mechanisms, and what you can do to manage the effects and improve your well-being. Understanding Libido Libido refers to a person’s sexual desire or drive. It is influenced by a combination of physical, psychological, and emotional factors. A healthy libido is essential for maintaining a fulfilling sexual relationship, as it affects how individuals connect with their partners, experience intimacy, and enjoy sexual activity. When libido is low or absent, it can cause frustration, stress, and strain on relationships. The Link Between Stress and Libido Stress is a natural response to challenging or threatening situations. It activates the body's "fight-or-flight" mechanism, preparing us to deal with danger. While this response can be helpful in short-term situations, chronic stress can have a more harmful impact on our physical and emotional health. One of the ways stress can manifest is through a decrease in libido. 1. Hormonal ChangesStress triggers the release of hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, which are designed to help the body cope with immediate stressors. However, prolonged exposure to stress causes the body to remain in a heightened state of alertness, leading to consistently high levels of cortisol. Elevated cortisol levels can disrupt the balance of other hormones in the body, including sex hormones like estrogen and testosterone. This disruption can result in a decrease in sexual desire and arousal. 2. Mental Health ImpactMental health plays a crucial role in sexual well-being. Chronic stress is often linked to anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders, all of which can negatively affect libido. Individuals experiencing anxiety or depression may feel disconnected from their bodies, struggle with self-esteem issues, or lack the motivation to engage in sexual activity. In some cases, stress can lead to feelings of emotional exhaustion or detachment, which can further decrease interest in intimacy. 3. Physical EffectsStress can also affect the body in ways that can reduce sexual desire. When you’re stressed, your body’s energy is often directed toward managing the stressor rather than supporting sexual function. Stress-related symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, digestive issues, and muscle tension can make it harder to focus on intimacy or feel physically comfortable during sexual activity. Additionally, stress can cause sleep disturbances, leaving you feeling drained and less inclined to engage in sexual activity. 4. Relationship StrainStress does not only affect an individual’s libido but can also strain relationships. When one partner is under stress, it can lead to misunderstandings, miscommunications, or lack of intimacy. The emotional and physical distance created by stress can make it difficult for couples to connect, leading to a decline in sexual desire and satisfaction. If both partners are stressed, this can further complicate things, making it essential for couples to work together to manage stress and improve their relationship dynamics. Coping Strategies to Manage Stress and Improve Libido If stress is affecting your libido, it is essential to take steps to manage it and restore balance to your life. Here are some strategies to help you cope with stress and improve your sexual health: 1. Practice Relaxation TechniquesRelaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and yoga can help reduce stress and promote relaxation. These practices activate the body's parasympathetic nervous system, which counters the effects of stress and helps bring the body back to a state of calm. Incorporating relaxation techniques into your daily routine can help you manage stress and improve your emotional well-being. 2. Prioritize SleepGetting adequate, quality sleep is essential for overall health, including sexual health. Sleep deprivation can exacerbate the effects of stress and interfere with hormone regulation. Establish a regular sleep schedule and create a sleep-friendly environment to promote restful sleep. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night to support both your physical and mental health. 3. Exercise RegularlyPhysical activity is a powerful way to reduce stress and improve mood. Regular exercise releases endorphins, the body’s natural "feel-good" hormones, which can counteract the effects of stress. Additionally, exercise improves circulation, boosts energy levels, and promotes relaxation, all of which can improve libido. Whether it's going for a walk, practicing yoga, or engaging in a sport, find an activity that you enjoy and make it a regular part of your routine. 4. Communicate with Your PartnerOpen communication with your partner is key to maintaining a healthy relationship and addressing stress-related issues. Talk about your feelings, challenges, and any concerns you have regarding intimacy. Working together to navigate stress and improve your connection can help restore intimacy and increase libido. Mutual understanding and support are vital for overcoming the emotional distance that stress can create. 5. Seek Professional HelpIf stress and its effects on your libido are persistent or overwhelming, seeking professional help is a crucial step. A healthcare provider can help identify any underlying physical or mental health issues contributing to low libido. Therapy or counseling, especially for anxiety or depression, can be beneficial in addressing the emotional and psychological aspects of stress. A specialist can guide you through coping strategies, medication options, and lifestyle changes to improve your overall well-being. Conclusion Stress is a natural part of life, but when it becomes chronic, it can negatively affect your libido and overall sexual health. The hormonal, mental, physical, and relational impacts of stress can significantly reduce your desire for intimacy and affect your emotional well-being. However, with the right strategies, such as practicing relaxation techniques, prioritizing sleep, exercising, and seeking professional help when necessary, you can manage stress and restore balance to your libido. <iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/iUFohncBsig" width="560" height="314" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe> If you are struggling with stress and its impact on your libido, consider speaking with our best psychologist at continental hospitals. Listening to music helps improve cognitive skills
Listening to music helps improve cognitive skills
Enjoy the melody, without damaging your ears Music inspires us to do many new things in life and motivates us to overcome challenges! Music improves other senses of a human body, like gaining better vision and improved response to touch. Overall music even helps in improving the ability to paint a better and complete picture of the world at large. However, one important caution is to avoid listening to loud music to ensure it does not damage the ears. Music is present in every aspect of our life and we voluntarily or involuntarily are exposed to music daily. It is important that one is exposed to the right kind of music, which is soothing in nature in the longer term, instead of loud/brash sounds. Intermittent bouts of rap or rock-n-roll are fine, but this cannot be a mainstay in one’s life to stay healthy for a long period of time. 5-Tips: Listen to Music, Responsibly Use Music Players at 60% of the Maximum Volume Use Your Music Player For 60 Minutes A Day Only Commenting on the impact of music, Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh, Consultant ENT Surgeon, Continental Hospitals said, “According to some research reports on the impact of music on education, it has been found that those students who listening to good quality music daily turn out to be good in science and mathematics, especially ‘algebra’. Music is believed to play the role of ‘social glue’, and young minds exposed to music emerge into good Samaritans as they grow.” “A 2014 research report by the Department of Education in the United States indicated that over 93% of students exposed to good music graduated with merit, and music also removes barriers between students coming from various ethnic and social backgrounds. Music also helps adolescents release or control emotions and helps them cope with difficult situations such as peer pressure, substance abuse, pressures of study and family, the dynamics of friendships and social life, and the pain of loss or abuse.” It is widely believed that rhythm abilities, such as tapping to a beat, relate with reading skills, and available initial evidence of how both abilities may rely on common underlying neural mechanisms of sound processing reiterates the importance of music in a student’s life. Not just these, teenagers associate playing music with music literacy, listening skills, motor ability, eye-hand coordination, and heightened intellectual capabilities, etc. Read More
Take care of your kidney”s health
Take care of your kidney”s health
Hyderabad, March 11 (IANS) At a time when the world is worried about coronavirus pandemic, the World Kidney Day on March 12 may pass as another annual event. But the kidney-related ailments are silent killer. The day aims to raise awareness about kidney”s importance to overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health issues worldwide. Diabetes, hypertension and obesity are some of the high-risk factors that result in kidney ailments and at times are life-threatening in nature, according to Dr Dhananjaya K.L., consultant nephrologist at Continental Hospitals, here. Undergoing tests is the only and best way to know the health of kidneys. India is estimated to have over 50 million people with diabetes. They are at a high risk of chronic kidney ailments. The diseases become prevalent, mainly due to poor lifestyle choices of people. Hence, it”s important to realise importance of leading an active and energised life to prevent the possibility of diabetes that could lead to kidney-related complications. “In a human body, kidneys are among the most amazing organs, which ensure wellbeing of the person. It”s the process that happens in a kidney that keeps bones and teeth strong,” said Dr Dhananjaya. “While dialysis is the most common available treatment to support failing kidneys, at an advanced stage, often considered as renal failure, the only option left is to undergo a transplant,” he said. Hyderabad, considered a major healthcare destination, offers world-class kidney transplant facilities from a variety of sources, like live and cadaveric transplant. How to stay stress-free during COVID-19 lockdown
How to stay stress-free during COVID-19 lockdown
People are suggested to main ‘social distance’ to ensure the menace of coronavirus does not find a breeding groundin the form of easy transmission between people. HYDERABAD: Unforeseen circumstances require unprecedented measures! And today India is under an unprecedented “lockdown” for 21-days to fight the global pandemic coronavirus. The lockdown would mean people would not be allowed to step out of their homes freely and will have restricted access to even everyday essential commodities. People are suggested to main ‘social distance’ to ensure the menace of coronavirus does not find a breeding groundin the form of easy transmission between people. However, for a large section of people in Indian society, thisis unacceptable! It has been noticed that people are not just worried about their economic prospects; but alsoexpressing anguish over getting restricted to their residences. Risk factors : Commenting on the risks, Dr. Jyotirmayi K, Consultant Psychiatrist, Continental Hospitals said,“Lockdown or other restrictions to daily routine will be stressful and there surely are going to be some psychological impacts on people. To avoid greater damage from happening time and again, we humans need to work harder enduring some levels of stress; and must realize that this phase too will pass soon.” To keep yourself active Remind yourself that this is a temporary phase Remember that you are a hero, and doing this for the community Stay connected with near & dear via phone, email, social media Sleep at regular routines to find each passing day relaxing Stay physically active to ensure mental agility Maintain balance by allocating specific work hours, and take regular breaks Focus on doing household chores and share burden with family members Avoid news and social media if you find it distressing “On an everyday basis, most people state they do not find time for themselves for their wellbeing. This 21-daylockdown has provided the perfect opportunity for people to spend time on themselves. Doing Yoga, speaking tofamily members, remembering past/childhood memories, speaking to old friends and reminiscing past memories couldbe a perfect way to keep oneself active and keep off from anxiety,” concluded Dr. Jyotirmayi. Another risk associated with this lockdown is the possibility of one retreating into a sedentary lifestyle, and thus adding many kilograms to the bodyweight. Commenting on this, Zeenath Fatima, Consultant Dietician, Continental Hospitals said, “During normal days manypeople tend to eat at restaurants or foods prepared not at home, doing no great favor to the human body. Put underrestrictions, now people are forced to opt for home-cooked food, which is the best and healthiest option any day.Eating green-leafy and other regular vegetables will not increase weight and during these stressful times, avoidingmeat or meat-based foods could be a better idea.” Life under a lockdown situation can negatively affect mental health, causing post-traumatic stress, confusion and even anger. But by keeping your active life going and maintaining peace in life is the best solution to ensure you wade through these difficult times with ease. Read More
What Covid? Birth date still matters
What Covid? Birth date still matters
In the times of Covid-19, what has not changed are the date and time when a newborn infant is born and doctors cannot argue about it as the pregnant woman is their major concern. These dictates are still being noted in maternity hospitals as the time and day of birthing is a priority for families and their astrological calendars. A C-Section delivery, very high in both Telugu-speaking states, is still a preference during these times too. Only corporate and big nursing homes are operational and all the load of affluent patients is on them. A senior doctor, on condition of anonymity, explained, “We have a virus around us but that does not stop people from arguing over the time and day of the delivery. These beliefs are strong and with a newborn baby, no risks in astrology are to be taken.” Doctors are keen that pregnant women are safe and for that reason normal delivery is carried out by junior doctors and senior doctors are around for supervision. Earlier, they would all crowd around the patient along with the nurses but now social distance is maintained. “It is like going back to old times where the woman has to push the baby down and from far, we would give instructions,” explained a senior doctor. C-sections are done by wearing personal protective equipment as due to Covid-19 these extra precautionary measures have to be taken during the birthing process. The biggest challenge stated doctors are the scans as they are not being carried out for all pregnant women. “We are going back to times when there were no ultrasound scans. This is because it would unnecessarily expose a pregnant woman to risk. Hence only if there is a clinical indication of anomaly in foetal movement then scans are being done. It is one in 2000 cases and, mostly, not required.” Scanning was a major part of all the three trimesters but doctors now do not want to risk their patients. The husband was a part of the birthing process but that also is not allowed as it is not safe. Similarly, those in the first and second trimesters of the pregnancy are not called to hospitals for routine checks but video conferencing is provided to clear their doubts. Tele-medicine and email are also used by patients to check on substitutes for medicines as there is a crisis of brands. Dr Sri Latha Gorthi, gynaecologist, explained, “So far we have dealt with patients who have been seeing us from first day. Hence we know their history. Yet we check with them if they have come in contact with anyone who has travelled from abroad. There has not been a single case so far but precautions of checking travel history are mandatory for us too.” Pregnant women are already immune-compromised and hence precautions in terms of social distancing, hygiene, avoiding contact with people from Covid-19-affected countries and also within the community is important, stated Dr Kavitha Naragoni, senior gynecologist and infertility specialist at Continental Hospitals.
