The Role of Genetic Testing in Cancer Treatment
The Role of Genetic Testing in Cancer Treatment
Cancer is one of the most complex diseases doctors treat today. No two cancers are exactly alike — even if two people have the same type of cancer, the way their bodies respond can be very different. That’s where genetic testing comes in. It’s changing how doctors understand, diagnose, and treat cancer. At Continental Hospitals, we believe in combining advanced medical technology with compassionate care. In this blog, let’s explore how genetic testing works, why it matters in cancer treatment, and how it’s helping patients receive more personalized and effective care. What is Genetic Testing? Genetic testing is a medical test that looks for changes, also called mutations, in your DNA — the material that carries information about how your body works. Some genetic mutations are passed down from parents, while others happen during a person’s life. In cancer care, genetic testing can be done in two main ways: Germline Testing: Checks for inherited mutations present in every cell of the body. This helps identify if you have a higher risk of developing certain cancers. Somatic Testing (Tumor Testing): Looks for mutations that occur in cancer cells themselves. This helps guide treatment decisions and predict how a tumor might behave. How Does Genetic Testing Help in Cancer Treatment? Genetic testing is like a roadmap. It shows doctors the specific mutations causing the cancer and helps them choose the most effective treatments. Here’s how it makes a difference: 1. Personalized Treatment PlansNot all cancers respond to the same treatments. By understanding the genetic changes in your cancer, doctors can recommend medicines or therapies that directly target those mutations. This is known as targeted therapy. Example:If a patient with breast cancer tests positive for a HER2 gene mutation, specific medicines like trastuzumab are more likely to work. 2. Predicting How Aggressive a Cancer IsSome gene mutations can indicate whether a cancer is likely to grow quickly or spread. This helps doctors decide how intensive the treatment should be — whether a patient needs surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or a combination. 3. Avoiding Unnecessary TreatmentsIf genetic testing shows that certain treatments won’t work for a patient’s specific cancer, doctors can avoid those options. This saves time, reduces side effects, and lowers healthcare costs. 4. Identifying Clinical Trial OpportunitiesMany new cancer treatments are being tested in clinical trials. Genetic testing can help match patients to these trials based on their cancer’s mutations, giving them access to the latest therapies. 5. Checking Cancer Risk in Family MembersIf a patient has a hereditary mutation like BRCA1 or BRCA2 (linked to breast and ovarian cancer), their family members can also get tested to understand their cancer risk. Early screening and preventive care can then be planned. When Should You Consider Genetic Testing? Your doctor may suggest genetic testing if: You have a personal or family history of cancer, especially at a young age. You have a rare type of cancer or multiple cancers. Your cancer has returned or isn’t responding to standard treatments. You’re interested in targeted therapy or clinical trials. At Continental Hospitals, our cancer specialists carefully evaluate each patient’s case before recommending genetic testing. Is Genetic Testing Safe and Accurate? Yes, genetic testing is generally safe. It usually involves a simple blood sample, saliva sample, or a small piece of tumor tissue. The results are highly accurate and help doctors plan better treatments. It’s important to note that while genetic testing provides valuable information, it doesn’t always predict whether you will develop cancer. It only shows if you have a higher risk or if your cancer has specific mutations. How is Genetic Testing Done at Continental Hospitals? At Continental Hospitals, Hyderabad, we offer advanced genetic testing as part of our cancer care services. Here’s how we make it easy for patients: Expert Consultation: Our experienced oncologists and genetic counselors will explain the need for testing and what it means for your treatment. Simple Sample Collection: Blood, saliva, or tumor tissue is collected safely and sent to our certified labs. Fast, Accurate Results: We use cutting-edge technology for reliable and quick reporting. How to Reduce Your Risk of Skin Cancer
How to Reduce Your Risk of Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, but it is also one of the most preventable. With the right knowledge and actions, you can significantly reduce your risk and keep your skin healthy for years to come. In this blog, we will walk you through simple, practical steps you can take to lower your chances of developing skin cancer. From sun protection strategies to healthy lifestyle habits, let's explore how to protect yourself and your loved ones. Understanding Skin Cancer Before diving into prevention, it's essential to understand skin cancer. Skin cancer occurs when skin cells grow abnormally, often due to damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds. There are three primary types of skin cancer: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) Melanoma (the most dangerous form) While skin cancer is largely preventable, certain risk factors like fair skin, a history of sunburns, and a family history of skin cancer may increase your risk. However, with regular check-ups and proactive care, you can lower the chances of skin cancer affecting you. Step 1: Protect Your Skin from the Sun The most effective way to prevent skin cancer is by protecting your skin from harmful UV rays. Here are some key sun protection tips: Wear sunscreen daily: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and apply it generously on all exposed skin, including your face, neck, ears, and hands. Reapply every two hours, especially if you are sweating or swimming. Seek shade: Whenever possible, stay in the shade, especially during peak sunlight hours (from 10 AM to 4 PM), when UV rays are strongest. Wear protective clothing: Clothing such as wide-brimmed hats, long sleeves, and UV-blocking sunglasses can add an extra layer of protection against harmful rays. Use UV-protective accessories: Consider using UV-blocking umbrellas, hats, and other gear to safeguard your skin from the sun. If you're noticing changes in your skin or have concerns about your skin health, visit Continental Hospitals in Hyderabad. Our expert dermatologists are here to provide guidance and support for all your dermatology needs. Contact us today! Step 2: Avoid Tanning Beds Tanning beds emit concentrated UV radiation that can increase your risk of developing skin cancer. Many people believe that tanning gives them a "healthy glow," but the truth is that tanning beds are dangerous. The use of tanning beds significantly raises the risk of melanoma, especially in younger individuals. To protect your skin, avoid tanning beds altogether and opt for a safer way to get a bronzed look, such as self-tanning lotions or sprays. Step 3: Regular Skin Checkups Performing regular self-exams of your skin is one of the best ways to detect skin cancer early. When checking your skin, keep an eye out for any changes in existing moles or new growths. Look for the following warning signs: Asymmetry: One half of a mole looks different from the other half. Border irregularity: The edges of the mole are uneven or jagged. Color variation: The mole has different colors or shades. Diameter: If the mole is larger than the size of a pencil eraser (about 6mm). Evolving: Changes in the size, shape, or color of the mole over time. In addition to performing self-exams, it's crucial to see a dermatologist or healthcare provider for regular skin checkups. They can identify potential issues early and offer expert advice on how to keep your skin healthy. Step 4: Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle Your overall health plays a significant role in reducing the risk of skin cancer. Certain lifestyle habits can improve your skin health and make it more resilient to UV damage: Eat a balanced diet: Consuming a diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals helps nourish your skin. Foods like fruits, vegetables, and nuts are packed with nutrients that promote healthy skin. Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps maintain skin hydration, which is vital for skin health. Dehydrated skin is more susceptible to damage from UV rays. Avoid smoking: Smoking weakens the skin’s elasticity and accelerates aging, making it more prone to damage. It also impairs circulation, affecting the overall health of your skin. Exercise regularly: Physical activity boosts blood circulation and improves your skin’s overall appearance. It also helps maintain a healthy weight, which can reduce the strain on your skin. Step 5: Know Your Risk Factors Some people are at a higher risk of developing skin cancer due to factors like skin type, family history, and lifestyle. Understanding your individual risk can help you take extra precautions: Fair skin: People with lighter skin, especially those who sunburn easily, are at higher risk. A history of sunburns: If you’ve experienced severe sunburns in the past, your risk of skin cancer increases. Family history: If someone in your family has had skin cancer, you may be at a higher risk. Age and gender: Skin cancer is more common in older adults, but it can affect people of any age and gender. If you identify with any of these risk factors, take extra care in protecting your skin and be vigilant about regular skin checks. Step 6: Early Detection is Key The earlier skin cancer is detected, the easier it is to treat. That's why staying vigilant about your skin health is so important. By following the tips above and seeking professional advice when necessary, you can detect skin cancer at its earliest stages and improve your chances of successful treatment. Preventing Falls in the Elderly: Safety Tips
Preventing Falls in the Elderly: Safety Tips
Falls are a leading cause of injury among the elderly, and they can have severe consequences on their health and well-being. With age, our bodies undergo changes that can affect balance, strength, and coordination, increasing the risk of falls. However, there are several strategies and safety tips that can help reduce the risk of falls and promote greater independence for older adults. In this blog, we will explore simple and effective ways to prevent falls in the elderly. We will also discuss the importance of seeking professional care to address fall risk factors and maintain a safe living environment. Why Falls are a Concern for the Elderly Falls among older adults are not only common but also potentially dangerous. They can lead to fractures, head injuries, and long-term complications such as loss of mobility, chronic pain, and even death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in four older adults falls each year. As we age, several factors increase our likelihood of falling: Decreased muscle strength: As we age, muscle mass naturally decreases, leading to reduced strength and stability. Poor balance and coordination: Age-related changes in the nervous system and the loss of sensory function can affect balance. Chronic health conditions: Diseases such as arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, and diabetes can impair mobility and increase the risk of falling. Medication side effects: Certain medications can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or low blood pressure, making falls more likely. Vision problems: Deteriorating vision can make it difficult to spot hazards or obstacles, increasing the risk of tripping. Top Tips for Preventing Falls in the Elderly 1. Regular Exercise for Strength and Balance Strengthening muscles and improving balance is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of falls. Simple exercises like walking, tai chi, and chair exercises can enhance stability and coordination. A regular exercise routine also helps maintain flexibility, improving the ability to react quickly to avoid a fall. Pro Tip: A physical therapist can help design an exercise program tailored to the individual’s needs and abilities. 2. Remove Home Hazards A large percentage of falls occur at home, where common household items and environmental factors can create tripping hazards. Some simple adjustments can make a big difference in creating a safer environment: Clear clutter: Remove items like loose rugs, electrical cords, or furniture that might block walkways. Install grab bars: Place grab bars in bathrooms near the toilet and in the shower or bathtub to provide support when standing or moving. Ensure adequate lighting: Ensure that all rooms, hallways, and staircases are well-lit, and consider nightlights to prevent stumbling at night. Use non-slip mats: Place non-slip mats in the bathroom, kitchen, and other areas prone to moisture. 3. Footwear Matters Wearing the right shoes can make a significant difference in preventing falls. Ill-fitting shoes or slippers with slick soles can increase the risk of slipping. Make sure that footwear is: Comfortable and well-fitting Non-slip and sturdy Closed-toed for better foot protection Avoid wearing socks or loose slippers, as they provide little grip and can easily lead to a fall. 4. Vision Care and Regular Eye Checkups Good vision is crucial for preventing falls, as it helps with depth perception, spotting hazards, and navigating spaces. Regular eye exams are essential for detecting vision problems, such as cataracts or macular degeneration, that can increase fall risk. Ensure that prescription glasses are up-to-date and consider using brighter lighting in rooms to enhance visibility. 5. Medication Review Certain medications, especially those that cause dizziness, low blood pressure, or drowsiness, can contribute to falls. It’s important to have a healthcare provider regularly review the medications you or your loved one are taking. If medications are causing side effects, the doctor may adjust dosages or recommend alternatives to reduce the risk of falls. Always follow the doctor’s advice and report any concerning symptoms promptly. 6. Use Assistive Devices When Needed For those with mobility issues, using assistive devices like canes, walkers, or wheelchairs can improve stability and prevent falls. It’s essential to choose the right device based on individual needs and to ensure proper training in its use. A healthcare provider can assess whether an assistive device is necessary and help the individual learn how to use it safely. 7. Stay Hydrated and Nourished Dehydration and poor nutrition can lead to weakness, dizziness, and fatigue—all of which can increase the risk of falls. Encourage older adults to drink enough fluids and eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and protein. Focus on foods that support bone and muscle health, including dairy, leafy greens, lean meats, and whole grains. Also, avoid excessive alcohol consumption, as it can impair judgment, balance, and coordination. How to Spot the Symptoms of Endometriosis
How to Spot the Symptoms of Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a common yet often misunderstood condition that affects many women worldwide. It occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, leading to pain, discomfort, and potentially fertility issues. Despite being a prevalent condition, the symptoms of endometriosis can sometimes be subtle, and many women may not realize they are affected until it becomes more severe. In this blog, we’ll explore how to spot the symptoms of endometriosis early and why it's crucial to seek help from healthcare professionals. What is Endometriosis? Endometriosis is a condition where tissue that behaves like the endometrium (the lining of the uterus) begins to grow outside the uterus, often on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or the tissue lining the pelvis. During the menstrual cycle, the endometrial tissue thickens, breaks down, and sheds, but because this tissue is outside the uterus, it has nowhere to go. This leads to inflammation, pain, and the formation of scar tissue, which can cause severe symptoms. Common Symptoms of Endometriosis Endometriosis can look different for every woman. Some experience severe pain, while others might not notice any obvious symptoms. Here’s what you need to watch for: 1. Painful Periods (Dysmenorrhea)One of the most common signs of endometriosis is intense pain during periods. It’s not your typical cramping — the pain can be sharp, stabbing, or constant in the lower abdomen and lower back, often starting before your period and lasting several days. 2. Pain During or After IntercourseMany women with endometriosis experience pain during sexual activity. This happens because the endometrial-like tissue outside the uterus can become inflamed, making movement uncomfortable. 3. Pelvic Pain Between PeriodsChronic pelvic pain that isn’t linked to your menstrual cycle is another red flag. You might feel a constant ache or pressure in your lower abdomen, which can worsen over time. 4. Heavy or Irregular Menstrual BleedingPeriods that are unusually heavy, last longer than a week, or arrive irregularly might point to endometriosis. Some women also experience spotting between periods. 5. Pain During Bowel Movements or UrinationIf you feel pain when using the bathroom, especially during your period, it could be because endometrial-like tissue is affecting your bladder or intestines. 6. Digestive ProblemsEndometriosis can often mimic digestive issues like bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and nausea. If these symptoms occur around your period and don’t improve with usual treatments, it’s time to get checked. 7. FatigueMany women with endometriosis feel unusually tired, especially around their menstrual cycle. Chronic inflammation and pain can drain your energy, making even simple daily tasks difficult. 8. Infertility IssuesEndometriosis is one of the leading causes of infertility. If you’ve been trying to conceive for over a year without success, it could be linked to underlying endometriosis. Facing endometriosis symptoms? Visit our best gynecologist at Continental Hospitals, Hyderabad, for expert care and compassionate support. How is Endometriosis Diagnosed? Since the symptoms of endometriosis can resemble other conditions, diagnosing it might take time. Here’s how doctors typically check for it: Medical history review and symptom discussion Pelvic examination to feel for cysts or scar tissue Ultrasound or MRI to detect growths Laparoscopy, a minor surgical procedure to confirm the diagnosis and sometimes treat the tissue How is Endometriosis Treated? There’s no permanent cure for endometriosis, but several treatments can help manage symptoms and improve fertility. Treatment options include: Pain relief medicines such as NSAIDs Hormonal therapy to control the growth of endometrial-like tissue Surgery to remove or destroy endometriosis growths Lifestyle changes like stress management, regular exercise, and a balanced diet Your doctor will suggest a treatment plan based on your age, the severity of your symptoms, and whether you wish to have children in the future. Why Choose Continental Hospitals? At Continental Hospitals, we understand that dealing with endometriosis can be emotionally and physically challenging. Listening to music helps improve cognitive skills
Listening to music helps improve cognitive skills
Enjoy the melody, without damaging your ears Music inspires us to do many new things in life and motivates us to overcome challenges! Music improves other senses of a human body, like gaining better vision and improved response to touch. Overall music even helps in improving the ability to paint a better and complete picture of the world at large. However, one important caution is to avoid listening to loud music to ensure it does not damage the ears. Music is present in every aspect of our life and we voluntarily or involuntarily are exposed to music daily. It is important that one is exposed to the right kind of music, which is soothing in nature in the longer term, instead of loud/brash sounds. Intermittent bouts of rap or rock-n-roll are fine, but this cannot be a mainstay in one’s life to stay healthy for a long period of time. 5-Tips: Listen to Music, Responsibly Use Music Players at 60% of the Maximum Volume Use Your Music Player For 60 Minutes A Day Only Commenting on the impact of music, Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh, Consultant ENT Surgeon, Continental Hospitals said, “According to some research reports on the impact of music on education, it has been found that those students who listening to good quality music daily turn out to be good in science and mathematics, especially ‘algebra’. Music is believed to play the role of ‘social glue’, and young minds exposed to music emerge into good Samaritans as they grow.” “A 2014 research report by the Department of Education in the United States indicated that over 93% of students exposed to good music graduated with merit, and music also removes barriers between students coming from various ethnic and social backgrounds. Music also helps adolescents release or control emotions and helps them cope with difficult situations such as peer pressure, substance abuse, pressures of study and family, the dynamics of friendships and social life, and the pain of loss or abuse.” It is widely believed that rhythm abilities, such as tapping to a beat, relate with reading skills, and available initial evidence of how both abilities may rely on common underlying neural mechanisms of sound processing reiterates the importance of music in a student’s life. Not just these, teenagers associate playing music with music literacy, listening skills, motor ability, eye-hand coordination, and heightened intellectual capabilities, etc. Read More
Take care of your kidney”s health
Take care of your kidney”s health
Hyderabad, March 11 (IANS) At a time when the world is worried about coronavirus pandemic, the World Kidney Day on March 12 may pass as another annual event. But the kidney-related ailments are silent killer. The day aims to raise awareness about kidney”s importance to overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health issues worldwide. Diabetes, hypertension and obesity are some of the high-risk factors that result in kidney ailments and at times are life-threatening in nature, according to Dr Dhananjaya K.L., consultant nephrologist at Continental Hospitals, here. Undergoing tests is the only and best way to know the health of kidneys. A person with symptoms, like fatigue, high blood pressure and swelling of feet, must be careful of his kidneys; and ideally undergo regular health check-up for blood sugar, creatinine and eGFR to assess its filtration rate. India is estimated to have over 50 million people with diabetes. They are at a high risk of chronic kidney ailments. The diseases become prevalent, mainly due to poor lifestyle choices of people. Hence, it”s important to realise importance of leading an active and energised life to prevent the possibility of diabetes that could lead to kidney-related complications. “In a human body, kidneys are among the most amazing organs, which ensure wellbeing of the person. These bean-shaped organs filter 1,200 ml of blood per minute (1,700 litres a day) to keep the person healthy. It also helps remove waste and maintain a balance of chemicals and minerals in the body. It”s the process that happens in a kidney that keeps bones and teeth strong,” said Dr Dhananjaya. “While dialysis is the most common available treatment to support failing kidneys, at an advanced stage, often considered as renal failure, the only option left is to undergo a transplant,” he said. Hyderabad, considered a major healthcare destination, offers world-class kidney transplant facilities from a variety of sources, like live and cadaveric transplant. Chief Transplant Urologist and a Padmasri Awardee Sarbeswar Sahariah, who recently completed 1,000 kidney transplant surgeries, believes transplantation is a safe and best approach for individuals suffering kidney failure to lead an active life. How to stay stress-free during COVID-19 lockdown
How to stay stress-free during COVID-19 lockdown
People are suggested to main ‘social distance’ to ensure the menace of coronavirus does not find a breeding groundin the form of easy transmission between people. HYDERABAD: Unforeseen circumstances require unprecedented measures! And today India is under an unprecedented “lockdown” for 21-days to fight the global pandemic coronavirus. The lockdown would mean people would not be allowed to step out of their homes freely and will have restricted access to even everyday essential commodities. People are suggested to main ‘social distance’ to ensure the menace of coronavirus does not find a breeding groundin the form of easy transmission between people. However, for a large section of people in Indian society, thisis unacceptable! It has been noticed that people are not just worried about their economic prospects; but alsoexpressing anguish over getting restricted to their residences. Risk factors : Commenting on the risks, Dr. Jyotirmayi K, Consultant Psychiatrist, Continental Hospitals said,“Lockdown or other restrictions to daily routine will be stressful and there surely are going to be some psychological impacts on people. To avoid greater damage from happening time and again, we humans need to work harder enduring some levels of stress; and must realize that this phase too will pass soon.” To keep yourself active Remind yourself that this is a temporary phase Remember that you are a hero, and doing this for the community Stay connected with near & dear via phone, email, social media Sleep at regular routines to find each passing day relaxing Stay physically active to ensure mental agility Maintain balance by allocating specific work hours, and take regular breaks Focus on doing household chores and share burden with family members Avoid news and social media if you find it distressing “On an everyday basis, most people state they do not find time for themselves for their wellbeing. This 21-daylockdown has provided the perfect opportunity for people to spend time on themselves. Doing Yoga, speaking tofamily members, remembering past/childhood memories, speaking to old friends and reminiscing past memories couldbe a perfect way to keep oneself active and keep off from anxiety,” concluded Dr. Jyotirmayi. Another risk associated with this lockdown is the possibility of one retreating into a sedentary lifestyle, and thus adding many kilograms to the bodyweight. Commenting on this, Zeenath Fatima, Consultant Dietician, Continental Hospitals said, “During normal days manypeople tend to eat at restaurants or foods prepared not at home, doing no great favor to the human body. Put underrestrictions, now people are forced to opt for home-cooked food, which is the best and healthiest option any day.Eating green-leafy and other regular vegetables will not increase weight and during these stressful times, avoidingmeat or meat-based foods could be a better idea.” Life under a lockdown situation can negatively affect mental health, causing post-traumatic stress, confusion and even anger. But by keeping your active life going and maintaining peace in life is the best solution to ensure you wade through these difficult times with ease. Read More
What Covid? Birth date still matters
What Covid? Birth date still matters
In the times of Covid-19, what has not changed are the date and time when a newborn infant is born and doctors cannot argue about it as the pregnant woman is their major concern. These dictates are still being noted in maternity hospitals as the time and day of birthing is a priority for families and their astrological calendars. A C-Section delivery, very high in both Telugu-speaking states, is still a preference during these times too. Only corporate and big nursing homes are operational and all the load of affluent patients is on them. A senior doctor, on condition of anonymity, explained, “We have a virus around us but that does not stop people from arguing over the time and day of the delivery. These beliefs are strong and with a newborn baby, no risks in astrology are to be taken.” Doctors are keen that pregnant women are safe and for that reason normal delivery is carried out by junior doctors and senior doctors are around for supervision. Earlier, they would all crowd around the patient along with the nurses but now social distance is maintained. “It is like going back to old times where the woman has to push the baby down and from far, we would give instructions,” explained a senior doctor. C-sections are done by wearing personal protective equipment as due to Covid-19 these extra precautionary measures have to be taken during the birthing process. The biggest challenge stated doctors are the scans as they are not being carried out for all pregnant women. “We are going back to times when there were no ultrasound scans. This is because it would unnecessarily expose a pregnant woman to risk. Hence only if there is a clinical indication of anomaly in foetal movement then scans are being done. It is one in 2000 cases and, mostly, not required.” Scanning was a major part of all the three trimesters but doctors now do not want to risk their patients. The husband was a part of the birthing process but that also is not allowed as it is not safe. Similarly, those in the first and second trimesters of the pregnancy are not called to hospitals for routine checks but video conferencing is provided to clear their doubts. Tele-medicine and email are also used by patients to check on substitutes for medicines as there is a crisis of brands. Dr Sri Latha Gorthi, gynaecologist, explained, “So far we have dealt with patients who have been seeing us from first day. Hence we know their history. Yet we check with them if they have come in contact with anyone who has travelled from abroad. There has not been a single case so far but precautions of checking travel history are mandatory for us too.” Pregnant women are already immune-compromised and hence precautions in terms of social distancing, hygiene, avoiding contact with people from Covid-19-affected countries and also within the community is important, stated Dr Kavitha Naragoni, senior gynecologist and infertility specialist at Continental Hospitals.
